About Firewise

Firewise helps communities prepare for wildfire. It provides a framework for neighbors to organize, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks.

Studies have shown that if houses on either side of your house are burning from a wildfire, it’s likely that your house will catch on fire too. But if only one house next to yours is burning, you have better odds at avoiding your house catching on fire.

Protecting your home is a community event because wildfires don’t respect property lines.  Imagine if your entire neighborhood was wildfire prepared – each home has created defensible space on their property, all homes are “hardened” from wildfire, and all neighbors are prepared to evacuate if needed. By preparing and organizing, you protect not only yourself and your property, but your entire community.  That’s what the Firewise USA® program helps neighborhoods do.

The Firewise USA® program was created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The NFPA is a self-funding non-profit engaged in creating standards for Fire Protection since 1869.

Our Goal

Moraga Orinda Firewise Network’s (MOFN) goal is to help all residents who live within the Moraga-Orinda Fire District boundaries (including the City of Orinda, Town of Moraga, and the unincorporated areas within Contra Costa County of Bollinger and Canyon) learn about the Firewise USA program, how to start a Firewise Neighborhood, and most importantly how to work together as a neighborhood to prepare for and survive a wildfire.

The Moraga-Orinda Firewise Network

Many neighborhoods have already organized and become Firewise recognized.  See if you are in a Firewise neighborhood within the Moraga-Orinda Fire District boundaries.
