MOFD Program Updates

Prescribed Burns

Prescribed fire is the carefully planned and intentionally managed use of fire to reduce wildfire risk and protect our community. By removing excess dry vegetation that can fuel destructive wildfires, prescribed burns help protect homes, neighborhoods, and open spaces. A healthier, more resilient landscape provides greater protection for our community, infrastructure, and quality of life.

In 2026, MOFD conducted prescribed burns on Carroll Ridge, Mulholland Ridge, and Fay Hill, treating a total of 14 acres along the shaded fuel break. MOFD has also conducted pile burns at Bear Ridge, Wagner Ranch, and Orinda Woods. (See photos.)

Community Wildfire Safety Ambassador Visits

Community Wildfire Safety Ambassadors help residents understand MOFD’s exterior wildfire hazard abatement requirements and provide practical fuel mitigation recommendations for homeowners planning fire-safe landscaping improvements.

So far in 2026, Ambassadors have completed 188 home assessments. While that number is slightly behind the pace of 2024, it is important to remember the tremendous increase in interest following the Los Angeles-area fires in 2025, when MOFD received nearly twice as many assessment requests as the previous year.

These one-on-one visits give residents an opportunity to learn about wildfire risk around their homes and identify practical steps they can take to improve their property’s resilience.

You can sign up for an assessment from an Ambassador here.

Public Education & Community Outreach

MOFD offers three ways for residents and community groups to connect with us through our Public Education and Community Outreach Program: Fire Station Tours, Site Visits, and Hands-Only CPR, AED, Choking, Bleeding, and First Aid Training.

Fire Station Tours give groups an opportunity to tour a fire station and learn about firefighting, emergency equipment, and what it is like for firefighters to live and work at the station.

Site Visits bring an engine company to community events or neighborhood gatherings to share educational information, stickers, and helmets.
