About Us
Our Mission
The purpose of the Moraga-Orinda Firewise Network (MOFN) is to help residents, who live within the boundaries of the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District (MOFD), prepare for wildfire via education and outreach.
MOFN is an all-volunteer group that shares and coordinates wildfire prevention information and activities across recognized Firewise neighborhoods within the Moraga-Orinda Fire District.
Each neighborhood uses the National Fire Protection Association Firewise USA Program to organize and support residents within their individual neighborhoods. MOFN collaborates and coordinates efforts between neighborhoods, sharing best practices and new wildfire prevention information as it becomes available.
MOFN helps new Firewise Neighborhoods by:
- Meeting with interested resident(s) to explain the benefits of creating a Firewise USA Neighborhood. This includes providing current MOFN Leaders to speak at neighborhood “block parties” to explain to your neighbors benefits and actions to “become” Firewise.
- Providing guidance on how to create the boundary of a new firewise neighborhood. Residents of homes that share the same roads or streets to evacuate in an emergency are natural starting points for identifying a new Firewise Neighborhood boundary.
- Provide guidance on how to organize a new neighborhood via a Firewise committee that typically utilizes Block Captains. Block Captains Coordination with the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) to perform a neighborhood risk assessment that is required for the new neighborhoods Firewise USA application.
- Coordinates with the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) to conduct a Risk Assessment walk through your new neighborhood. The information provided to neighbors who attend this walk will be documented in the Firewise Risk Assessment document prepared by the new neighborhood Firewise Leader, supported by MOFN.
- Supports the neighborhood Firewise Leader in preparing the 3-Year Action plan and other information included in the Firewise USA application.
MOFN helps existing Firewise Neighborhoods by:
- Sharing wildfire prevention resources and best practices, coordinating efforts among Firewise Leaders across the Moraga-Orinda Fire District. MOFN holds bi-monthly Leaders meeting throughout the year to share information and coordinate efforts.
- Outreach and education to residents within MOFD boundaries who currently are not in a Firewise Neighborhood. We actively support new neighborhoods and expanding existing neighborhoods.
- Support and staff Wildfire Prevention Education and Outreach events in coordination with MOFD, City of Orinda and Town of Moraga.
- Volunteer support of the MOFD Fire Adapted Community Ambassador (FAC-A) Program. This program, created in 2022 and managed by MOFD, provides all Moraga and Orinda residents with free wildfire prevention home assessments and information about home hardening improvements.
Our History
We began as a consortium of Firewise leaders from Orinda, beginning as the Orinda Firewise Council in 2020. Our purpose was to support each other by sharing resources and best practices, and to engage the City of Orinda and the Moraga Orinda Fire District (MOFD) in wildfire prevention.
In 2023 we evolved to the Moraga-Orinda Firewise Network; our intent is to help ALL residents who live within the boundaries of the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection (MOFD) District (MOFD) prepare for wildfire, via Education and Outreach. We conduct a Bi-Monthly Firewise Leaders meeting to share information and coordinate activities.
