About Us

History and Mission

We began as consortium of Firewise leaders from Orinda, beginning as the Orinda Firewise Council in 2020. Our purpose was to support each other by sharing resources and best practices, and to engage the City of Orinda and the Moraga Orinda Fire District (MOFD) in wildfire prevention.

In 2023 we evolved to the Moraga-Orinda Firewise Network; our purpose is to help residents who live within the boundaries of the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection (MOFD) District to prepare for wildfire, via Education and Outreach. We conduct a Monthly Firewise Leaders meeting to share information and coordinate activities as follows:

  1. Sharing resources and best practices, coordinating efforts among Firewise Leaders in Moraga and Orinda.

  2. Support and Staff Wildfire Prevention Education and Outreach events in coordination with MOFD, City of Orinda and Town of Moraga.

  3. Outreach and education to residents within MOFD boundaries who currently are not in a Firewise Neighborhood. We actively support new neighborhoods and expanding existing neighborhoods.

  4. Volunteer Support of the MOFD Fire Adapted Community Ambassador (FAC-A) Program. This program, created in 2022 and managed by MOFD, provides all Moraga and Orinda residents with free wildfire prevention home assessments.

History

The Orinda Firewise Council (OFC) was founded in February of 2020 in response to the “new normal” of a year-round wildfire season resulting from climate change and decades of un-mitigated fuel buildup.  Driven by the enthusiastic support of neighbors, elected leaders and our visionary Fire Chief, we have quickly grown in size and influence.  Our committees are working to bring residents, the City of Orinda, our firefighting professionals and neighboring communities together to make us all safer from wildfire.  The indiscriminate nature of wildfire make us interdependent in our actions and requires that all landowners mitigate fuel on their property regardless of whether it’s public, private or corporate.  No one is safe from a wildfire until everyone is safe from a wildfire.

Who We Are

We advocate for 33 Firewise Neighborhoods (April 2024) across Moraga and Orinda, representing 3,802 dwelling units: MOFN Neighborhoods with Leaders.
